January 1st Marked the first day of work for the New Chief of United Nations - Secretary-General António Guterres.
In his first speech, he vowed to make 2017 a year of Peace and said:
Quote:“On this New Year's Day, I ask all of you to join me in making one shared New Year's resolution: Let us resolve to put peace first”

The New Secretary General of United Nations was emotional in expressing that one question weighs heavy on my heart,
Quote:“That is: how can we help the millions of people caught up in conflict, suffering massively in wars with no end in sight?”

“Peace must be our goal and our guide,”  the new chief of UN said and urged all citizens, governments and leaders to strive for overcoming their differences.

“I appeal to you all to join me in committing to peace, today and every day. Let us make 2017 a year for peace,” he urged.

He was formally appointed by the UN General Assembly to the post of New Chief of United  Nations on 13 October 2016.

Mr. Guterres ages 67 and will serve for a five-year period from 1st January 2017 to 31 December 2021.

In the past, his career highlights were:
  • Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002
  • UN High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015.

GATE Last Minute Tips | How to prepare for GATE in 1 month

0
0
Recently I received a query through personal communication from a GATE aspirant. Thought to respond to the person concerned publicly so as to help others in addressing the similar queries.

Quote:Query:

I am preparing for GATE BT and going to appear this year in february. I am also working on a govt.project as my dissertation in CSIR insitute. With just one month in hand I dont know how to plan or to prepare or to execute. the other works collapses this. I need your guidance and i am on the neck that I should clear gate with a good score this time.

Quote:Response:

Hi ****,

My suggestions might sound redundant (if you have gone through previous articles of mine), but following is the ideal strategy to prepare for GATE in last few months:

1. PREVIOUS YEAR PAPERS ARE BIBLE FOR LAST MONTHS

Go through each and every question of the previous year papers thoroughly. Pick one paper at a time, and explore it from neck to tail. By being thorough, I mean something like the following approach:

http://in.biotechstudents.com/antibiotic-resistance-gram-neg/

While going through the previous year papers, it is extremely important to pay special attention to the papers of the years in which the organizing  institute of GATE was same as the current organizer.

2. EXPLORE THE ORGANIZING INSTITUTE

Go through the faculty profile of the organizing institute and pay attention to expertise of the junior faculty (Assistant / Associate professors). It is very likely that atleast 4-5 questions will pertain to their expertise/ subjects they teach.

3. GIVE A LOT OF MOCK TESTS
Nothing trains you better than acclimatizing yourself with the blue print of the exam and simulating the exam environment. Most people fail in competitive exams due to the exam anxiety (and hence subdued performance of their nervous system) rather than lack of preparation.
Your mind is world's most complicated but wonderful machine. If trained well about the exam conditions, it will help you decipher answers to seemingly difficult questions by referring deepest corners of your subconscious memory (one must not forget that there is a huge catalog of theory, concepts, practicals etc. spanning the entire degree course in one's mind). Ideally, one doesn't need any special preparation for exams like GATE, as every question pertains to the concepts one learns in 3-4 years of his/her degree course (an active and confident mind will find a way to solve various problems it confronts). Hence, in the situations of last minutes, the best preparation is in 'boosting yourself & your confidence' by conditioning your mind to the exam environment (not once but time and again).  This way, you will brush up your concepts in addition to making yourself accustomed to the exam.
"Confidence is the key. Don't forget that every student appearing for GATE is as common (and as special) as you are. He/She is also anxious and in stress. In the end, the one who manages his/her anxiety well, will succeed"

Bionomics: Definition, Comprehension and Understanding in detail

0
0
This article covers all the details pertaining to "Bionomics". Where as internet is flooded with definition of Bionomics, there is hardly any dedicated resource that comprehensively covers the topic of Bionomics.

Bionomics

Essence of Bionomics:

In simplest terms, Bionomics refers to the study of a living organism and its relation with its environment.

Bionomics aims at recognizing the traits of the organism concerned and conditions of the environment it thrives in, that act as the proximate causes of its various activities in its niche.

Etymology of Bionomics (origin of the word: Bionomics)

In the modern context, whereas some experts represent Bionomics as a confluence of two greatly different fields: "Biology" and "Economics", coming together to study the economics of life of an organism in its preferred environment, the true and legitimate origin of Bionomics is from the French and Greek words: Bionomique (french word, pertaining to ecology) and Bionomie (Greek word, meaning Ecology).

Significance of Bionomics

Bionomics in its true sense holds significance in studying almost every living organism and its relation with environment (including plants , marine life, life in space etc),  but, Bionomics as a field became more popular in the context of studying 'parasitic / vector borne diseases' (especially those pertaining to pests/ insects). Following are the key focal points of Bionomics in context of vector borne diseases:

1. Establishing the relation between disease epidemiology and the ecological status of its vector.
2. Using this relationship in controlling the progression/ spread of the vector.

The aforesaid relation is determined by thoroughly studying the following:

a). Life Cycle of the vector
b). Optimal living conditions for various stages of life of vector (i.e what promotes or disrupts the growth or reproduction of the vector).
c). Feeding patterns and periods of activity (nocturnal or diurnal).
d).  Information on characteristics of specific larval habitats
e). Study of ecological diversity of the vector species coupled with their behavioural plasticity.
f). Interaction patterns  of vector with other organisms (and the causes of those interactions).
